Isla Urraca sits off Buena Vista, at the quiet end of the Bocas del Toro archipelago, and there is nothing on it but this. Six bungalows stand on posts over the shallows, built from timber cut locally, their decks hung with swings that drop straight to the water. Rescued monkeys live free in the canopy behind them, semi-wild and entirely uninterested in the guests. The whole operation runs off the grid on solar power and collected rainwater, and it works without plastic. It is a small, coherent idea executed at exactly the right scale, and it never tips into the theatrical.

Why It Works

Private island is a phrase that usually means a resort with a jetty. Here it means six rooms and no one else: no day boats, no neighbouring property, no road, no lobby. The bungalows are spread far enough apart that you hear water rather than other guests, and one of them stacks two floors for a group of up to six. Adults only keeps the register calm. Why This Location

Bungalows on Posts, and What That Changes

Building over water rather than on sand changes how a room behaves. The floor is a metre or two above the surface, so the light comes up as well as down, the breeze runs underneath, and the sound is constant. Each bungalow has its own deck and steps into the shallows. The larger one runs over two levels with panoramic views from the upper floor and room for a family or a group of friends taking the island between them.
