Casa Madre Tierra
What we like about this house is its refusal to look tropical. Casa Madre Tierra...
Eclipse takes its name seriously. The ten-room hotel sits on a promontory above Las Lajas, in Panama's Chame district, where the hills fold down toward the Pacific in one uninterrupted line, and the alignment between the balconies, the pool and the ocean on the horizon is deliberate enough to have named the place. Renovated recently and kept deliberately small, the property reads more like a private retreat above the countryside than a beach hotel, though the coast is close enough to visit for the day. From the second-floor rooms, jungle gorges drop away below the railing, and on a clear evening the sky over the valley does most of the work.
We chose Eclipse for what a resort twice its size rarely manages: a single, consistent point of view. The infinity pool, the room balconies and the dining terrace all face the same valley-to-sea sightline, so nothing about a stay here competes with the landscape outside it. Ten rooms keep the property intimate rather than anonymous, and a cliff-top setting inland from the coast gives it a sense of place that the larger resorts nearer central Coronado don't really attempt. It suits a traveller who wants scenery over amenities, and quiet over a beachfront address.
Eclipse sits inland from the coast, on the road between Las Lajas and La Laguna in Chame district, about 11.6 km from central Coronado and roughly 14.7 km from Playa Coronado beach — a drive, not a walk. What that distance buys is quiet: rolling countryside, jungle gorges and open sky in place of beachfront traffic and construction. Guests who want sand underfoot come and go by car or the property's own shuttle service; guests who came for the view tend not to leave the pool deck at all. It's a trade worth knowing before booking, and one this hotel is built around rather than apologising for.

Eclipse's ten rooms were recently renovated and sit on the second floor, each air-conditioned and opening onto its own private balcony — arguably the room's real amenity. Rather than facing inward toward a courtyard, every balcony looks out over the folding hills of Las Lajas, with the Pacific visible on the horizon on a clear day. It rewards a slow schedule: coffee outside before the day's plans, a last drink there after dinner. Rooms are simply furnished rather than dressed up, which suits a property whose real investment sits in the view rather than in the decor.
The infinity pool is the property's social centre, angled toward the same view as the rooms, loungers set along its edge and a separate, fenced pool kept for children close by. The Eclipse restaurant and full bar run through the day, with tables set poolside or in the covered dining hall depending on the heat and the hour — a practical arrangement on Panama's hottest afternoons, and a scenic one at sunset, when the sky over the hills tends to put on its own show. Day visitors are welcome to use the pool, bar and restaurant without booking a room, which keeps the terrace lively even outside of check-in hours.
Eclipse works best for travellers who want the countryside and the coast on the same trip, rather than a beachfront address outright. The hotel is pet-friendly, welcomes families with children via its separate kids' pool and play area, and keeps a shuttle service on offer for guests who would rather not rent a car to reach Coronado or the beach. Check-in runs from 3pm to 8pm and check-out from 8am to 11am — later than many city hotels, and worth building into a drive in from Panama City or Tocumen airport.
