Above the Canyon, With the Volcano in the Window

Boquete sits high in Chiriqui, close enough to the Costa Rican border that the cloud arrives from two directions and the afternoon drizzle has a local name. The highlands here grow some of the most sought-after coffee in the world, and the roads climb through fincas, flower nurseries and cloud forest. Hacienda Los Molinos occupies a shelf above the canyon of the Cochea river on the Alto Boquete side, and the view is the whole argument: the gorge below, the ridges opposite, Baru volcano closing the horizon when the sky clears. It reads as a hacienda in shape and in habit, not as a resort dropped on a hillside.

Why It Works

Boquete has no shortage of guesthouses and very few houses that hold a standard. This one holds it on both sides. There is a proper kitchen, a spa, a pool open all year, a tennis court and gardens kept as gardens; and there is a scale that never turns into a lobby full of lanyards. Why This Location

Alto Boquete is the lower shoulder of the valley, a few minutes by road below the town and its restaurants, and the position buys two things the centre cannot offer: the canyon view, and warmer nights than the upper fincas. The coffee estates begin immediately above, Finca Ceriana among them, and the trailheads for the quetzal path and the Baru summit are within half an hour. David, the provincial capital and its airport, is about forty minutes down the mountain, and Panama City a short domestic flight beyond that. What the address imposes is a car or a driver, which the house arranges on request.

Suites, Villas and a Garden That Runs to the Edge

Accommodation splits between suites in the main building and villas standing on their own in the grounds, which is what makes the house work for a couple and for three generations at once. The suites look either into the canyon or across the gardens, and the canyon side is worth insisting on: the drop is immediate and the sound of the river carries up at night. Villas add kitchens and terraces for longer stays.
