A Norwegian Engineer, Volcanic Soil and a Coffee Estate

The story starts with Tollef Bache Mönniche, the Norwegian engineer who came to the isthmus for the canal, went up into the Chiriquí highlands and understood what volcanic soil, altitude and steady rain could do for coffee. The estate he planted still works. Finca Lérida stands at about 1,600 metres on the slopes of Volcán Barú, six kilometres above Boquete, and the hotel occupies the original plantation house and a set of newer buildings arranged along the hillside. Guests are staying on a farm, not at a reconstruction of one, and the difference is audible at five in the morning.

Why It Works

Very few hotels can offer something you cannot buy elsewhere. This one grows it. The Geisha lots from this hillside place regularly in the Best of Panama competition, which means the cup served at breakfast is the same coffee that specialty buyers fly in to bid on. The second asset is the land: 340 hectares, much of it primary cloud forest, with marked trails on the property rather than a drive away. Between the two sits a family run hotel that has resisted the pull of resort amenities, and is better for it.

Why This Location

Alto Quiel is the high, quiet side of the Boquete valley, reached by a climbing road through smallholdings and coffee terraces. The town, with its restaurants, market and tour desks, is six kilometres below, close enough for an evening out and far enough that the estate keeps its own weather. Above the property the forest runs up towards Volcán Barú National Park, where the summit trail and the crossing to the Caribbean slope begin. Birdwatchers come for the Pipeline and Quetzal trails, and the highland species that make this one of the great places to walk slowly in Panama.

Rooms in the Plantation House, Suites in the Forest

Four categories, and the choice genuinely changes the stay. The historic estate rooms sit in the original house and carry its proportions and its creaks. Garden suites are the middle ground, around forty square metres, opening onto planting. Cloud forest suites are larger, with the canopy at the window and the sense of being inside the trees rather than beside them. The Bache Mönniche suite, furnished in period pieces with the volcano in view, is the one to book for an occasion. None of them are decorated to a theme, which on a working estate is the correct decision.

The Cup, and the Tour That Leads to It

The coffee tour is not a marketing exercise. It follows the whole chain, from hand harvesting on the slopes through processing and drying to roasting, and finishes at a cupping table where the differences between Geisha, Caturra and Catuaí are laid out side by side. The tasting room keeps several brewing methods and sells beans to take home, which is how most guests end up with more luggage than they arrived with. The restaurant uses the estate garden and the highland repertoire, and breakfast is timed for people leaving early to look for birds.

Quetzals, Trails and What to Bring

The resplendent quetzal is the reason many guests come, and the estate trails are among the more reliable places to look, with the best chances in the first half of the year. Bring layers: at this altitude the mornings are cold, the afternoons cloud over and the rain arrives without ceremony. Walking shoes with grip matter more than anything else in the suitcase. A car makes the road down to Boquete easier, though transfers can be arranged, and guests with limited mobility should ask about the estate rooms, since the site is built on a slope.
